Injustice

Jasmine Reese Contemporary Literacies Professor Rosen Injustice When we speak of injustice, there are many ways that injustice can ruin a person's life.   From society’s perspective the unjust behaviors from law enforcement have sparked major controversy. Across the United States, many interactions between law enforcement and citizens end fatally due to the excessive force by law enforcement. These behaviors are typically aimed toward minorities. Injustice presents itself when there are unfair outcomes in solving crime. Injustice has various forms which are wrongful convictions, police brutality, and more. Why does the system continue to fail us citizens? The system can be corrupt and even biased. As a result, it becomes personal as it interferes with the way our justice system operates in order to prevent and stop crime. According to the Innocence Project, only one percent of the United States prison population approximately 20,000 people are wrongfully convicted. Individ...

Inequality

Image
Jasmine Reese Professor Rosen Contemporary Literacies Inequality Inequality is something that hinders equality within the justice system and how criminals are treated based off who they are. How can we put our trust into our legal system if they continue to fail us citizens in all aspects. The justice system fails citizens by victimizing them. Many people fall victim to the justice system from police brutality, wrongful convictions, and stereotyping. There were many incidents in which we placed our trust and protection into the hands of law enforcement for situations to end tragically. These factors play a significant role in the inequality that has stained the world we live in. How does inequality impact law enforcement? Officers are placed into positions in which they sacrifice their well-being and lives each day in an attempt to prevent and tackle crime. In most cases they do so successfully, and the other chances become slim as things escalate between law enforcement and cit...

Jasmine Reese Professor Rosen Contemporary Literacies April 11, 2023 What activities do you enjoy doing while trying to cope with difficult situations? Wes Moore described his experiences in the new neighborhood in which he now resided in. He and his family resided in the Bronx in New York City. He described the time he went to go play basketball after he finished his chores. He also described the physical attractions as he stated " I took my time getting to the courts, practicing dribbling the ball between my legs, but I also tried my best to absorb the new neighborhood. There were many more people on the streets, sitting on the stoops, hanging out, than I was used to. The boom-bap of early hip-hop, still young and close to its Bronx roots, tumbled out of the apartment buildings, mixed with Spanish music blaring from boom boxes ." (Moore 2010 p.43). Growing up in an environment similar to Wes Moore's, was relatable because my community consists of the same thing. I live...

The Other Wes More: One Name, Two Fates: Wes Moore

Jasmine Reese Professor Rosen Contemporary Literacies Questions- Are we products of our environment or products of our expectations?  Being raised in any environment is just a small portion of one's identity. I found that in the beginning segment of this Ted Talk with Wes Moore, to me it exemplified the idea of identity. Wes was discussing this idea in which he discussed his book. He stated that "What's inside of a book is all authors. Those are the author's words and the author's thoughts. What's on the outside the cover, the title, that's a lot of publishers because that's the publisher's chance to market, and when the publishers start having conversations with their authors about what they want the cover to look like, and the title to look like in many cases it's ceremonial." I believe that this is an example of how individuals are stereotyped or judged by society because of their background. In addition, it is about what's on the i...
